![]() Unfortunately, this dragging feeling is what prevents me from finishing this book early. There are just too many characters, too much backstories, and too many things going on that might get you lost. Most characters have a backstory written meticulously, while it can be intriguing, at some point, it becomes overwhelming. Almost all of them are huge walking red flag. There are sooooo many characters in this novel and honestly, while they're all quite well written, they mostly aren't likeable. However, Cantik itu Luka isn't all about Dewi Ayu, but her three (or four?) daughters and the people around her. ![]() ![]() She lives in Halimunda, an entirely fictional city in Indonesia, and where most of the plot unfolds. I can't fathom how her mind works but that's what makes her a good lead. She is independent, ingenious, and an interesting character. This story follows the life of Dewi Ayu, from her childhood to her old days, from when she died to after she revived, and finally when she died again.ĭewi Ayu is as brilliant as Eka Kurniawan who wrote her. ![]() I know this may sound corny and old-fashioned, but: Cantik itu Luka is like a thorny rose. Thanks to its very intriguing opening line and synopsis, I brave myself to read this very heavy book, and after finishing it, I can confidently say: the word 'heavy' doesn't apply just literally.Ī little advice from me: read this book only when you're sane, or read it anyway if you don't get emotional easily over a book. ![]()
